Spring is in the Air

Spring is in the Air

Brides are planning their weddings for this Spring and Summer.  I thought this would be the perfect time to provide you with our top 10 ideas for your big day.  A Spring wedding is the perfect time to start new, whether it’s in starting to plan your wedding day or you’re already prepared for your big day in the next few months.

  1. A tea length wedding dress is fresh and is perfect for any rustic or back yard style wedding this Spring.
  2. Bow ties have made a huge comeback.  They now come in a large variety of colors and patterns and can provide the groom with that something extra he’s looking for.
  3. Groomsmen can overheat on a very warm day, so consider a lightweight, light colored suit for them.  They’ll thank you for it.
  4. Glam up any wedding ceremony or reception with chandeliers.  They come in all sizes and can typically be easily installed, even for outside locations (gardens, trellis, and any backyard).
  5. Spring florals are fresh, bright and beautiful.  Lillies and Gerber Daises are perfect and they come in a multiple number of colors. Pick a color, it’s your day!
  6. Are you looking for that special getaway after the ceremony? Try a two seated bicycle or mo-ped.  Non-traditional for sure, but very memorable and unexpected for you and your guests.
  7. Lighting is pretty special and changes the whole aviance in your reception.  Up lighting is everywhere, so why not try something a little more Spring like, like colorful lanterns or use crystal chandeliers everywhere! It will make a powerful impact on your lighting and the tone set for your room.
  8. Spring is in the air, so check into an ice cream truck as your dessert or part of your dessert.  We all have great memories of the ice cream truck coming down the street when we were kids and running to get it.  This will bring back memories for everyone and is fun and unexpected.
  9. Don’t’ forget your “must have” photos. Something special for the two of you. Try a photo with you wedding party that’s different and new.  You’re photographer will have a list of ideas for you and if you have something special in mind, share the idea with him.  These are your pictures and you want them to last a life time.
  10. Favors are always fun to give to their guests.  It’s Spring so give your guests pretty packets of garden seeds or bulbs, mini trees or even mini florals.   The seeds will grow as your love grows for one another.

Wishing you much happiness as you enjoy the colors, the smells and everything Spring!

Happy planning!

The Day After Christmas;….

snowflakes

Here it is the day after Christmas.  The presents have been opened and the children are playing with their new toys.  Did you receive that special gift you were hoping for? Or was that gift one of the simple joy of being with family and friends during this holiday season and being grateful for the blessings in your life?  At this time of year, there is alot of commercialism regarding presents and the hottest gadgets. Gifts come and go, but family and friends are those type of gifts we are able to cherish and love forever.  Wishing you much love, joy, health and happiness during this holiday season, as we move ever closer to the New Year and 2015.

If you were a special lady this holiday season that received an engagement ring, as did two of my nieces, then we know the planning process for such a special day is about to begin.  Enjoy this time to plan with family and friends. Remember wedding planners are always available to help you through the hurdles of planning your day and can actually become a dear friend. Congratulations to the newly engaged brides and grooms and happy planning!

Do I REALLY Need A Professional?

Wedding checklist

This weekend was a beautiful weekend as we move into Fall.  My granddaughter Devynn and I decided we would make some cake pops.  Anyone who knows Devynn and I know we love to bake!  Whether it’s the family Christmas Cookies we make every year or just a fabulous pan of brownies, baking is in our blood.  We even kid we’re going to open a bakery together some day.  So this weekend we decided to make cake pops and yes we now know cake pops are definitely not “our thing”.  We made the pops too big, then too small, burned some of the chocolate and had such a hard time trying to cover the pops with chocolate, let alone the ones that fell down the sticks because they were too heavy.  We decided we’d leave the cake pops to the Professional Bakers.  Buddy Valastro (Cake Boss) where are you when we needed you?

When you’re planning your wedding, you always think, “I can do that” or “I don’t need to hire someone to do that”.  Not everyone has the eye of a photographer or a florist who designs gorgeous floral arrangements.  Whether it’s your centerpieces, your wedding dress or your invitations you really should consider a Professional.

A Professional’s expertise is priceless!  You’re not only hiring them for your wedding, you’re hiring their expertise, their experience and their creativity.

If you know a Professional or you have a family member or friend who is a Professional in their field, by all means talk to them.  Their input and recommendations as experts in their field will help guide you in your decisions as to who to hire.  Or your friend may be taking photography classes at your local college, but does he have the eye and ideas of a Professional Photographer?  You can purchase your flowers from your local grocery store, but a Professional Florist can design and bring your vision to life, even on a budget.

Keep an open mind when you speaking with Professionals. Be honest and share with them what you’re looking for and your expectations.  Not every Professional will be a good fit, so if you don’t find a good match in one field, reach out to someone who is more your style.

Happy Planning!

5 Tips To Being A Fabulous Maid of Honor

maid of honor

Your best friend or sister is getting married and you were asked to be the Maid of Honor. You may be asking yourself what does that mean? That means you’re someone very special to the bride and she’s honored you with this special position. But what do you do?  Here’s my five top tips on being a Fabulous Maid of Honor:

1) Offer to do “it”, again and again and again.  Whether your bride is looking for a custom cake or topper, a florist for those special ordered flowers or looking for that perfect favor for her guests, help her from the start and run with it.  You don’t want the bride worrying about anything.  You need to be one step ahead of her and get things done.

2) Don’t be afraid to delegate the numerous things that will go on.  Have grandma, her godmother or a favorite family member help with the details of her bridal shower.  And don’t be afraid to let others share in the expense of these gatherings and items.  You certainly aren’t independently wealthy and everyone should contribute a little something toward the big day, whether it’s grandma, her godmother or favorite family members.

3) Say nice things about the groom or partner.  She is currently on cloud nine and is so happy. Tell her what a great choice she’s made and let her smile.  After all, you’re the Maid of Honor and your opinion counts.

4) ….and if you don’t care for the groom…..don’t share it. Hopefully before things have gotten so far as you being the Maid of Honor, you’ve shared your concerns.  The bride knows your concerns and doesn’t need to hear it over and over again.  Be supportive, have a listening ear and know when to just let it go.

5) Don’t forget to have some “me” time.  Pamper yourself prior to the wedding and unwind.  This is a job for all practical purposes and  you may not have alot of time for yourself. So make time to go to the salon, have a mani/pedicure or a massage and relax.  On the big day you’ll be busy, but be sure to enjoy yourself….after all you’re the Maid of Honor for a reason.

Happy planning!

Step Moms Rock

Image

I was recently interviewed by a reporter to discuss step  mothers and their involvement in their step daughter’s wedding. I thought this was  an interesting topic and I wanted to share my thoughts on it.

When you think about a step mother, you may typically think of the wicked step mother of Cinderella. However in reality I find most step mothers are not like that at all.  They typically want whats best for their step children.  Whether it’s ensuring a warm and safe roof over their heads or contributing financially to their step daughters wedding.  They have huge hearts full of love for their step children.

So where does the step mother fall in place regarding her step daughters wedding?  It depends.  If you have a loving relationship with your step daughter, she may want you to be fully involved in the planning, wedding ceremony and reception.  I’ve had clients who have step parents who were fully invested in the planning of the brides big day but at the same time not try to stand in the place of the brides mom.  In every blended family, there’s a place for step parents.  Every couple and their family dynamics are different.  So it’s all about communication between the bride and groom and their parents/step parents.  Miscommunication will always cause hard feelings between family members, so be clear on your wishes and how you see your step mother playing a role in your big day.

If there isn’t positive input from your step daughter, graciously and respectfully step back out of the lime light.  After all this is her big day.  This is her time to shine with family and friends. So kick back, enjoy this once in a life time day and have a cocktail.

Happy planning!

How To Find YOUR Wedding Planner

Image

He asked you to marry him, you said yes and you now have this beautiful ring on your finger.  What to do next? Where do you start in planning your wedding? If you’re like most people, you haven’t ever planned a wedding.  You may have planned your family reunion or Aunt Martha’s surprise birthday or maybe even your grandparents anniversary party. But a wedding can certainly be daunting.

My first suggestion to any engaged couple is hire a wedding planner.  Now you would expect I’d say that, given I’m a wedding planner. But this is what I discovered… I first started planning weddings because I loved the beauty of my couples and their take on their special day.  It didn’t take me long to realize, EVERYONE should hire a Wedding Planner. You know all the reasons to hire one….she’ll take the stress of planning such an important day off your shoulders….she’ll look after all the details….she’ll deal with all the family drama so we don’t have to…the list goes on. But how do you find a planner that fits you as a couple?

A few suggestions would be to start with an internet search of local wedding planners and coordinators in your area. Don’t forget to check the Association of Bridal Consultants (https://www.bridalassn.com) who provide recommendations of experienced members in your local are.  There’s also various wedding services available locally (in Syracuse, NY) at WomenTIES (www.womenties.com) a base of women entrepreneurs regionally through out New York State.

So you’ve narrowed down your options, where do you go from here? Call your potential planners and talk to them on the phone, schedule an appointment to meet with them for an initial consultation.  You need to get a feel for the right planner for you.  Everyone has different personalities, so why wouldn’t wedding planners? Find the right fit for you.  If you’re free spirited and don’t care for the formality of a typical wedding, find a planner you feel comfortable with, who can give you the feel and look you’re going for.  Basically, you’re interviewing planners to find that right fit.  And lastly, don’t forget references. Talking with prior clients will give you an idea as to how well your potential planner works with her clients and what you can expect.

Remember your wedding planner is there to help you, talk you through those stressful moments, hold your hand and hug you once your married.  But there is so much more behind the scenes she does for you, even if you don’t see it.  So when thinking about or looking for a wedding planner or coordinator, find the right fit for you. Most planners become good friends with their clients and this is someone you’ll be spending a lot of time with.

Happy planning!
